CREATIVE IMAGES by Paul Killiner ARPS BPE3*

For the purposes of inspiring LSAPS members towards the production of more 'Creative' images.

Paul has kindly provided us with 20 examples of his successful 'Creative Images', each with a brief (in-a-nutshell) description of the techniques he's used. Several of the images were generated in the darkroom, using conventional (wet) technology, the balance were manipulated 'Digitally'.
Paul hopes that these images will encourage you to 'have-a-go', and extend beyond 'what-the-camera-saw', but only if you want to !?

365 PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS

A recent guest blogger (09/02/2011) on Scott Kelbys' blog page was Craig Ferguson ~ here's a link to that page.

Craig explained how he decided, in late 2009, to post a 'Photography Tip' each day, every day, throughout 2010, to his website, as a 'project' for that year. No mean feat, eh !?

There is a link at the bottom of this text which will take you to Craig's website where you will be able to view all the tips he posted to his site.

Each page contains 24 'tips' ~ click on the image related to each topic posted to read/view the tip in question.

At the bottom of each page is an option to view 'Older Entries' (and/or 'Newer Entries') which will enable you to scan through all 365 Photography Tips, should you wish to do so.

There's bound to be something to interest (inform) everyone.

DIGITAL KNOCKOUT COMPETITION
Winning Image:
"Fisherman Landed"
by Ian Gray

Our annual projected image knockout competition was held on Thursday 27th January. This competition is open to all LSAPS members, without regard to their grade, who enter three images, plus an extra one in case of a tie.

The judge (who in this instance judged cold) previewed all 111 images first, before going through them in sequential rounds, progressively knocking out the weaker images as he thought appropriate.

Images that were eliminated in the first round scored 1 point, those eliminated in the second round scored 2 points, etc. There were six rounds in total, with the final winning image scoring 7 points.

There was also an award for the accumulative winner; the person whose combined score, for all three images, gained the most points.

The single image scoring top marks on the night was
Ian Gray with “Fisherman Landed” (7 points) (image on left)

The accumulative winner was Terry Clark with
“Going For The Jack” 3 points
“But You Said Tomorrow” 4 points
and “Macaw” 6 points. (images on left)

The judge for the event was
Glyn Davies, President of Chorley PS

Terry Clark

Accumulative Winner:
Terry Clark

Recent concerns, and actual instances of plagiarism, within L&CPU and PAGB circles, have given rise to an article being written by Christine Widdall AFIAP DPAGB BPE3* (the current president of the L&CPU) entitled:-
"Plagiarism in Photography ~ Towards a Code of Conduct".

If you are in any doubt whatsoever, as to what constitutes 'plagiarism' within the context of Club, L&CPU & PAGB competition images, then this is a worthwhile read.

AUDIO VISUAL COMPETITION

At the Great Northern AV Festival yesterday 4th December,
at Wilmslow Guild,
our secretary Keith Storey won a medal for the Best New Entrant!

He won the Pollock Medal, presented by the RPS AV Group, given originally by George and Doreen Pollock, good friends of LSAPS.

Through the medium of song, the sequence told the story of a letter from
the war poet Wilfrid Owen to his mother. Keith is comparatively new to AV.
There was stiff competition and we are all thrilled for him.

Congratulations go to Robert Millin for having successfully gained a CPAGB distinction at the recent PAGB assessment meeting held in Wilmslow.

"In February this year I submitted prints for the first level of entry to the PAGB, the credit, (CPAGB).
My assessment was held in Wilmslow on the 28th November.
An entry of 10 prints, slides or PDI’s are required for this level and each image is assessed individually by 6 judges who can each award up to 5 points per image.   A total of 200 out of 300 possible marks are required for a pass, so that means an average of 20 for each image.   All the images from all the applicants are mixed together, although you decide in which order your images are considered.
There were some 600 images presented last Sunday and you sit nervously waiting, firstly for your images to appear, and secondly to hear what mark the judges have awarded.   I kept a keep a running total and was lucky enough to have all but reached the required score after my 8th image.

The main difference between the LRPS and PAGB, at this level, is that LRPS requires a complete panel of 10 images be presented and marked together, whereas the CPAGB presents each image individually, therefore the judges do not see all 10 images together.

It is nerve wracking and exciting, as well as challenging, to select the images that you consider will meet the standard.
I found it very useful to discuss my submission with a number of more experienced L.S.A.P.S. club members".

L&CPU Knock-out

David and I, Anthony Hull and Dave and Joan Webster, went to the Albany Science College, Chorley on Saturday night, 20th November to support Lytham in this competition.

There were well over 100 people there and a super atmosphere. Chris Widdall, L&CPU President compèred and the judge was John Cartlidge, EFIAPg from the Midlands, he was very good humoured and I have to admit that I agreed with most of his choices, particularly the last ones.

As there were 39 clubs entered they only used 4 from each club - we had all submitted 8. We didn't do badly on the whole! My Clownfish went out in the first round which was a bit of a shock to my system but you can't win 'em all! Sorry about that folks!

In the next round we lost Alan Cadman's Performing Snails, another image which has done very well in other comps. However, both Alison Greenwood's Locks and Lashes and Janice Finestone's Street Performer stayed in for two more rounds - it was nitty-gritty time by then - and we ended up 11th equal.

The competition was stiff and varied and we saw some super images. We must congratulate Poulton club for tying third with Birkenhead; Wigan 10 were 'only' second - that's a rarity!. The winners on this occasion were North Cheshire.
All the scores are on the website. (www.lcpu.org) .
In third place was an artistic image of Tango Dancers, second was a stunning polar bear eating a fish with gulls around in the snow and the winner was 'Enemy At The Door' by Tony Glover of St.Helens, a wonderful shadowy mono picture of an old woman on the inside of a frosted glass door with a 'hoodie' on the outside - you could feel her fear - dare she open the door? What does she do?! It goes to show that for a photograph to have 'Wow' factor it must make you FEEL something!
